The Healing Power of Community: Why Love is Medicine
/Dedicated to Granny Poo Poo and all that love her
A few weeks ago, my grandmother had a stroke. It was sudden, frightening, and for a moment we thought we might lose her. But then something extraordinary happened. The very second her people—her family, her lifelong friends—arrived at the hospital, her recovery began. It was as if the presence of love itself shifted the atmosphere and breathed life back into her.
But it wasn’t just the people in the hospital room. Around the world, prayers began to rise up—for healing, for strength, for God’s mercy. And I believe with all my heart that those prayers joined together in heaven, moving the hand of God.
That moment reminded me of something we often forget: Love is medicine, and God is the Great Physician.
We Were Never Meant to Do Life Alone
From the very beginning, God designed us for community. Scripture tells us, “Two are better than one… If either of them falls down, one can help the other up” (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10). We are wired for connection, for relationship, and for love that reflects God’s own heart.
In times of crisis, this truth shines brightest. Isolation makes us weak, but togetherness strengthens us. And when we lean into the Lord, His love flows through us into the lives of others—through presence and through prayer—bringing comfort, peace, and even healing.
Love is More Than a Feeling
Love is not just a word or emotion—it’s an action. It’s showing up. It’s being present. It’s holding someone’s hand in the hospital and reminding them that not only are they not alone, but that God Himself is near.
But love also looks like the prayers whispered in living rooms across the country. It looks like faith-filled words spoken on behalf of someone you may never meet. It’s the collective cry of God’s people reaching His heart.
The Bible says, “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8). Love gives people the courage to keep going when they feel like giving up. It’s the invisible medicine that works in the spirit before it ever shows up in the body.
God Winks and the Power of Faith
During this journey, God gave me a reminder of His presence that I’ll never forget. As I flew to be with my grandmother, the plane landed exactly at 11:11. In that moment, I felt the Lord whispering, “Pay attention.” Later, He led me straight to Hebrews 11:1:
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
It was as if God was saying: I am here. I am working. Keep believing.
These little “God winks” are not coincidences—they’re Holy reminders that the Lord is guiding every detail, even in the scariest moments.
God’s Love Flowing Through Community
When we show up for one another, we are living out the love of Christ. Jesus told His disciples that the world would know us by our love (John 13:35). That love has the power to break fear, restore hope, and breathe new life into weary souls.
And love doesn’t stop at the walls of a hospital room. It crosses borders, it travels miles, it unites people who may never meet face-to-face. When prayers are lifted together, they become a chorus of faith that shakes heaven.
It’s not just human affection that makes the difference—it’s God’s love working through us. His Spirit brings peace that surpasses understanding, strength that goes beyond our own, and healing that doctors sometimes can’t explain.
What My Grandmother Taught Me
Watching my grandmother’s strength return when her people showed up—and knowing that countless others were praying across the world—was one of the most powerful lessons I’ve ever seen lived out. It reminded me that no matter how advanced medicine becomes, nothing replaces the power of prayer, community, and God’s presence.
We heal faster when we love deeper. We live longer when we walk together. And we thrive most when we know—without a doubt—that we belong to God and to one another.
One thing is certain: we each have our appointed day. From the moment we were born, our earthly bodies began their countdown, but our souls were destined for forever.
Don’t wait until life throws you into a crisis to discover the power of community. Build it now. Show up for the people around you. Forgive them. Sprinkle grace like glitter, for others and for you. Pray for those you may never meet. And don’t forget to pay attention to the God winks—because they remind us that the Lord is near. And let love—and the Lord who is Love—be the medicine that keeps not just your body, but your soul, alive.
